Homemade Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (approximately 6 medium) McIntosh, Gala, Crispin, Cortland, Golden Delicious - peeled, cored and cut into chunks
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar with 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    or
  • 1 Cup "Redhots®" Cinnamon Candies

Preparation

Combine apples, 3/4 cup water, sugar with cinnamon (or even better, use Redhots® candies) in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat, cover lightly or open vent and simmer until apples are very tender, about 40 minutes.

Uncover and simmer until almost all liquid in saucepan has evaporated, about 10 minutes and sugar or candy is dissolved. Remove from heat and cool 30 minutes

Use a potato masher and smash apple mixture until coarse and chunky (or use hand beater and lightly blend if you like silky smooth). Serve at room temperature or refrigerate until cold. May be frozen up to 6 months and defrosted for a meal or treat. Makes about 3 cups. Wonderful for holidays!
